How Wydad tenure dented Rulani's coaching record

After South African coach Rulani Mokwena's departure from Wydad Casablanca was made official, KickOff compares his tenure with his seasons as a head coach at former club Mamelodi Sundowns.

Mokwena parted ways with Wydad having elevated the club to third position in the Botola Pro standings with three matches remaining for the campaign.

Statistically, he improved the side from last term, where they had one of their worst finishes, ending sixth on the log with 44 points.

The young tactician, however, did not significantly improve the Moroccan giants, as by matchday 27 he had helped them accumulate only 45 points.

Not being paid salaries for a series of months could have impacted negatively on what he could offer.

Mokwena's sojourn in North Africa, however, has dented his remarkable coaching statistics, as he departs with an overall 40% winning rate, after managing 14 wins, seven losses and 14 draws out of 35 matches in all tournaments.

That's a significant drop in standards, compared to his full season as head coach at Sundowns, where he ended 2023/24 with a 65,5% winning rate.

Out of 58 matches last season, he managed to win 38, draw 12 and lose eight matches in all competitions.

The former Orlando Pirates coach achieved a slightly better feat of a 66,6% winning rate at Chloorkop in the 2022/23 season, after he was appointed as sole head coach from matchday 10 of the league.

He could have had a higher winning rate in his first season as a head coach, following the dismantling of the co-coach arrangement, having suffered only one loss and enjoying a remarkable 22 wins from 33 matches.

Mokwena was only let down by 10 draws, the majority of which came when the side were already guaranteed the league title with games to spare.
