High-flying PSL club sign Mpumalanga's 'CR7'

Motsepe Foundation Championship champions-elect Durban City have snatched the signature of a standout player from the Durban University of Technology, who has drawn comparisons with the likes of Relebohile Mofokeng.

Ngwenya is best remembered for the remarkable goal he scored against Venda University of Technology in last year's Varsity Cup.

The 20-year-old, hailing from Mayflower in Mpumalanga province, had previously trained with AmaZulu FC's DStv Diski Challenge team.

However, he did not secure a contract after then Usuthu DDC team coach who recommended him for signing, Vusimuzi Vilakazi, was promoted to the first team to be co-coach alongside Arthur Zwane.

Before his stint with AmaZulu, Ngwenya had also been with Baroka FC but could not be signed as he had accepted a place at DUT, where he is currently studying.

Ngwenya's versatility will be a vital asset for his new side as he can play as a striker as well as on both wings.

The KwaZulu-Natal club finalised his signing this week, and he is expected to travel with the team to Gauteng for the match against JDR Stars on Sunday.

He has signed a 16-month deal, which includes an option for an additional two years.

In an interview with KickOff, Ngwenya's manager, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed confidence that Durban City has found a true talent.

"I thank the chairman, Mr. Farook Kadodia, and the head coach for making this boy's dream come true," the manager stated.

"In the past three years, I have invested heavily in his aspirations, taking him to various places, and I can confidently say that no coach or club chairman has been unimpressed with him. The only obstacle was his commitment to his studies, as he values education highly.

"Durban City has acquired a gem in Nhlakanipho. His bravery can be compared to that of (Relebohile) Mofokeng, (Mohau) Nkota, and (Mbekezeli) Mbokazi. This boy loves to play, and he is good at it. The entire Mpumalanga province refers to him as 'CR7' for a reason. South Africa is in for a treat. He loves scoring goals.

"I spoke to his mother this morning, and she was nearly in tears with joy. I have a good relationship with the family."
