Carabao Cup wrap: Liverpool run riot at Lincoln City

Liverpool showed no mercy to lower tier side Lincoln City with a 7-2 hammering in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Thursday evening.

Virgil Van Dijk skippered the Reds as off-season signing Konstantinos Tsimikas made his debut while Adrian replaced Alisson Becker in goal.

Xherdan Shaqiri opened the floodgates in the first ten minutes with a double from Takumi Minamino and Curtis Jones following suit before Mako Grujic and Divock Origi completed the rout.

Lincoln did manage to get on the scoring front courtesy of second-half executions from Tayo Edun and Lewis Montsma.

Manchester City also progressed to the fourth round after seeing off AFC Bournemouth 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

A change in City's goal saw Zack Steffen replace Ederson Moraes while Eric Garcia, Rodri Hernadez and new signing Ferran Torres were handed starts.

Liam Delap netted the opener in the opening 20 minutes, but his strike was quickly cancelled out by Sam Surridge who drew the visitors level.

The winner arrived late in the second half courtesy of Phil Foden, who added to his finish against Wolverhampton Wanderers in their Premier League opener on Monday.
