Man City send Liverpool crashing out of League Cup

Manchester City defeated rivals Liverpool 3-2 to secure a spot in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup on Thursday night.

Kevin de Bruyne was thrown straight into the City line-up alongside Riyad Mahrez and Cole Palmer, while Erling Haaland lead the attack, looking to continue his impressive season.

Haaland carved out a big opening for the hosts on six minutes when he broke free down the right before teeing up Palmer, who sent his effort well wide from close range.

The opening goal arrived in the tenth minute when Haaland picked up from where he left off before the break by turning home a cross from De Bruyne.

Jurgen Klopp's men would get back on level terms with their first meaningful chance on 20 minutes when some neat passing ended with James Milner teeing up Fabio Carvalho to fire into the bottom corner from 12 yards.

Reds goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher was called into action ten minutes before the interval, with the shot-stopper denying Ilkay Gundogan before he kept out Nathan Ake's header a couple moments later.

City did restore their lead two minutes after the halftime break when Rodri did well to pick out Mahrez, who took one touch before curling one into the far corner.

That lead did not last too long as Salah brought Liverpool level for a second time in the game by turning home a cross from Darwin Nunez, who had got the better of Aymeric Laporte on the flank.

The hosts would get their lead back in the 61st minute when Ake got on the end of De Bruyne's well-weighted cross to head into the bottom corner.

Nunez should have levelled matters for the away side ten minutes later after being slipped through on goal down the right, but the striker failed to hit the target with only Stefan Ortega to beat.
