Carabao Cup match report Everton v Manchester United

Manchester United progressed to the Carabao Cup semi-finals with a late 2-0 win over Everton on Wednesday evening.

Captain Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes were the only survivors from the United side that crushed Leeds United, while Robin Olsen, Seamus Coleman and Andre Gomes returned for Everton.

The Red Devils started brightly in the earlier exchanges, as Fernandes, Paul Pogba and Edinson Cavani pinned the Toffees in their own half with numerous balls in and around the area.

Cavani was at it again towards the 20th minute when his first-time volley at the back-post forced Olsen to palm back into play before the Uruguayan fired the follow-up into the side-netting.

Everton began to gather momentum inside the half-hour mark and produced Dean Henderson to a flying save off a close-range free-kick from Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Sigurdsson was presented another inviting chance in the last five minutes of the first half, but Henderson got down to smother the former's rasping shot from outside the six-yard area.

United regrouped and started the second half just as the first, with Cavani smashing a loose ball from a tight angle into the side-netting after the Toffees struggled to clear their lines.

Everton were forced to make a substitution ten minutes in the second half after a collision ended Richarlison's evening, with Bernard replacing his countryman.

Both sides desperately pushed for the opener following the final quarter of the match, but misplaced passes coupled with hurried all-round offensive movements scuppered their objectives.

The Red Devils hit the front two minutes from time when Cavani cut into the edge of the area to curl into the bottom-corner after a receiving a pass from Anthony Martial.

After end-to-end goal-mouth action, United put the match beyond doubt when Martial ran onto a pass from Marcus Rashford to find the bottom-corner, as it ended 2-0.
