Man Utd begin post-Ten Hag era with big win

Manchester United 5-2 Leicester City

Manchester United began life without Erik Ten Hag in style after crushing Leicester City 5-2 to advance to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday.

Interim boss and club legend Ruud Van Nistelrooy got his first taste in the hotseat on the back of Erik Ten Hag's sacking and restored Alton Bayindir in goal ahead of Andre Onana.

The Dutch legend's tenure got off to a fiery start with Casemiro making the breakthrough in tremendous fashion before Alejandro Garnacho added a second a while later.

Leicester pulled one back though courtesy of Bilal El Khannoussi, but the host continued to dominate and secured a third through skipper Bruno Fernandes with Casemiro joining in to complete his brace.

However, the goal-blitz opening spell didn't stop and saw Conor Coady gave the Foxes more hope with a smart finish right on the stroke of halftime.

The home team were in further control in the second period and made it five when Fernandes finished smartly to complete his brace.

Brighton Hove Albion 2-3 Liverpool

Tournament holders Liverpool joined Manchester United in the last eight with a tense and hard-fought 3-2 victory over Brighton Hove Albion.

Arne Slot named Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Caoimhin Kelleher on the bench, wit Vitezslav Jaros given a rare start between the sticks.

Dutchman Coady Gakpo put the Reds ahead after a goalless first half and helped himself to a double minutes later with an equally decent finish.

Brighton looked for a comeback through Ivorian Simon Adingra, but Colombian Luis Diaz restored the Reds' two-goal cushion before Tariq Lamptey's last-gasp finish for the host proved nothing but a consolation.

Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 Manchester City

Manchester City missed out on a quarter-final spot following a disappointing 2-1 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur.

A completely different line-up for City saw Stefan Ortega, Gundogan, James McAtee, Nico O'Reilly, Savio, Matheus Nunes with Phil Foden up top, while Timo Werner earned a rare start for Spurs

Werner managed to justify his inclusion five minutes in and picked up a delivery from Dejan Kulusevski to get the better of Ortega.

Kulusevski proved inspirational once again shortly before the half-hour mark when he played a telling ball for Pape Matar Sarr to take flight and make it 2-0.

The Citizens were back in it though right on the stroke of the interval as Nunes latched on the end of Savio's delivery to fire beyond Guglielmo Vicario.

With the host in control for large parts, City nearly levelled deep in added time through O'Reilly but Yves Bissouma hurried back and cleared from the goal-line.

Preston 0-3 Arsenal

Arsenal produced a dominant display to see off Preston North End 3-0 for a place in the quarter-finals of the competition.

Teen goalkeeper Tommy Setford was restored by the Gunners, who presented a strong eleven with Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli and Raheem Sterling in a front three with Ethan Nwaneri also given a run out.

The Premier League giants were ahead earlier in the first half when Jesus finished off an assist from Jakub Kiwior before Nwaneri doubled the lead with a delivery from Jesus.

With a healthy lead at the break, the Gunners didn't stop dominating and extended their lead when Kiwior proved influential again and teed-up Kai Havertz to pounce.

Newcastle United 2-0 Chelsea

Chelsea were bundled out of the tournament after going down 2-0 to Newcastle United at St James Park Stadium.

A change between the sticks for the Blues saw Filip Jorgensen start with Ruben Veiga, Joao Felix and Christopher Nkunku also given outings as Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali picked out the Magpies stall.

Tonali came good for the host a few minutes past kick-off and delivered a telling assist for Alexander Isak to take aim and rattle the back of the net.

Chelsea were thrown into further disarray just moments after going behind as defender Axel Disasi mis-timed a defensive clearance and ended up finding his own net.
