Rulani's arrival met with fever pitch in Algeria

The announcement of Rulani Mokwena at MC Alger has raised expectations of a better and exciting league, largely thanks to a strong PSL connection.

Mokwena has been given the opportunity to influence Algerian football, unlike at former club Wydad Casablanca, where by the time he was appointed, they were at their worst in years.

In contrast, MC are at their strongest, having won the Algerian Ligue 1 title for the past two seasons.

Ironically, one of Alger's competitors in the league is CR Belouizdad, who finished third last campaign, under Sead Ramovic.

The rivalry between Mokwena and Ramovic while they were in the PSL, particularly pre and post the matches between Mamelodi Sundowns and TS Galaxy, got the public excited, though the skirmishes turned to be ugly, involving brawls and threats of litigation.

The PSL connection in the Algerian top-flight does not end there, as former Orlando Pirates coach Josef Zinnbauer is one of the rivals, after his side finished second by two points last term, while former Sundowns assistant coach Romain Folz is at Olympique Akbou.

"I don't think I've ever been excited about the Algerian football season, domestically, as I do this year and it's mostly due to the PSL," Algerian journalist Maher Mezahi admitted on African Five-a-side podcast.

"We have Sead Ramovic at CR Belouizdad, we have Rulani Mokwena at MC, we have Josef Zinnbauer at JS Kabylie. Mokwena and Zinnbauer will be playing CAF Champions League, Ramovic will be playing CAF Confederation Cup, Romain Folz, interesting young coach at (Olympique) Akbou (initially as Technical Director but helped in the bench to survive relegation)," he said.

Mokwena was credited with the scouting and talent that Wydad acquired, under financial difficulties, and is expected to bring his nous in the transfer market, for a team that is thriving financially.

"And we're in the middle of a transfer window, it's just very exciting and the transfer window ahead is going to be massive because if we can get a huge influx of talent in the Algerian league, I think this will be the strongest Algerian sides have been since probably the mid-2000s," Mezahi added.
