Chiefs in the red over Sam signing

The latest transfer window will come with losses for Kaizer Chiefs after failing to reap any rewards on their risk to acquire Bongani Sam this time last year.

Sam was a shock signing before the start of the 2024/25 season switching from Orlando Pirates.

This website has been informed that there was a transfer fee paid for Sam to move across the fence dividing the two Soweto giants.

However, a year later Sam makes his way out of Naturena without playing due to injury and non-selection.

He was the only player signed by the club at the beginning of last season leaving without earning minutes.

The 27-year-old also didn’t play in the six months prior to his arrival at Chiefs with his last share of minutes coming in December 2023.

So, beyond the transfer fee paid by Chiefs to bring Sam in they have also paid salaries for a year without getting any returns.

Beyond that the termination of the three-year deal that he signed will be terminated with a settlement to pay.

This adds up to a total of as much as R5 million lost from what the transfer fee and what has been paid to Sam over the last year inclusive of what will be the settlement.

Sam was a surprise signing who only played from start to finish in seven games for all the years he was at Pirates.

He also featured in patches in another 21 games, before spending loan time at Maritzburg United and Moroka Swallows.

Amakhosi have since signed Paseka Mako and Nkanyiso Shinga for the left-back position where Sam plays.

Chiefs still have Bradley Cross and Happy Mashiane as options in the same position while Rushwin Dortley can put in a shift at left-back as well should circumstances get extreme.
