Banyana thrash Mali to clinch top spot

Reigning champions Banyana Banyana thrashed Mali 4-0 to secure top spot in Group C at the Women's Africa Cup of Nations on Monday evening.

Desiree Ellis' charges came into the clash knowing their spot in the quarter-finals had been secured after results in Sunday's group stage action.

Goalkeeper Andile Dlamini was back in the Banyana starting line-up while Amogelang Motau, Lebohang Ramalepe and Hildah Magaia were also given starts by coach Ellis.

South Africa got off to the perfect start when Jermaine Seoposenwe did well to play in Ramalepe, who needed no second invitation to rifle the ball into the top corner from around 12 yards.

Banyana continued to dominate and were rewarded with a second goal on 32 minutes when captain Refiloe Jane curled home a lovely free-kick from the edge of the box.

While Mali struggled to create any clear-cut openings at Dlamini's goal, the reigning champions pushed more for goals at the other end as Magaia got her name on the score-sheet on 60 minutes with a composed finish from close range.

The fourth goal arrived with 11 minutes left on the clock as two substitutes combined after Ronnel Donnelly turned home a low cross from Nonhlanhla Mthandi to seal an emphatic win for the champions.

The South Africans will now take on Senegal in the quarter-finals on Saturday night.

Confirmed line-ups:

South Africa: Dlamini, Dhlamini, Makhubela, Mbane, Magama, Jane, Motau, Motlhalo, Ramalepe, Magaia, Seoposenwe.

Subs: Swart, Donnelly, Mohlakoana, Holweni, Mogolala, Salgado, Mhlongo, Magagula, Cesane, Mthandi
