In this edition of My First, KickOff catches up with former Orlando Pirates defender Bheki Nzunga.
The retired full-back shares some of his earliest experiences in life, both on and off the field.
My First School:
"I attended Sekelo Primary School in Sethama, Gauteng. I think I was 7 when I started school because I began a bit late. To be honest, I was nervous. I was attending school with my brother."
My First Kiss:
"My first kiss happened on my way from church. I loved going to the late church events, and I was around 14 or 15 years old when it happened."
My First Child:
"My daughter was born in 2013, shortly after I signed with Orlando Pirates. I was 24 years old at the time, and her name is Luyanda."
My First Soccer Boots:
"My brother took me to town, and without me knowing, he was going to buy me soccer boots. He was close to former Pirates player Jurry Bantwana, whom we met at a shop in Eastgate. They both recommended that I choose adidas Argentina soccer boots."
My First Red Card:
"I never received a red card, I was one of the cleanest defenders of my generation."
My First Own Goal:
"I was playing for White Birds FC in my neighborhood when I scored an own goal. It was a cross that I tried to intercept, but it ended up in my own net."
My First Goal:
"I can't say I remember my very first goal, but I know I scored many during my career, as I often went forward."
My First PSL Match:
"My first match in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) was against Platinum Stars in Rustenburg. I was already a Buccaneer by then."
My First Individual Award:
"Unfortunately, I never received an individual award in the PSL. This worried me for a long time, but I eventually had to come to terms with the fact that some things are just not meant to be. There were games where I felt I deserved to win the Man of the Match award, but it never happened."
My First Car:
"My first car was a Honda. I didn't even know how to drive! Someone left the car with me in a remote place, and I had to figure out how to drive it home. It cost me R50,000."
My First Signing-On Fee:
"My first signing-on fee was R150 000 at Chippa United, but I only received half of it."
