Downs' POTY potential nominees pile up?

With the end-of-season awards postponed to a later date, a former Mamelodi Sundowns star has picked his two most impressive players from the Tshwane giants from 2024/25.

The coveted PSL Footballer of the Season and Player of the Season nominees lists will most likely be dominated by Sundowns players.

Lucas Ribeiro Costa and Orlando Pirates attacker Relebohile Mofokeng have become popular choices from fans in the current campaign.

However, after Sundowns reached the final of the CAF Champions League, this website spoke to Brent Carelse on which players impressed him on the continent and also in the PSL at his ex-club.

"Teboho Mokoena and (Marcelo) Allende, they've been brilliant in the Champions League. Allende came to the party, he scored a few goals as well," he noted.

"But I think Mokoena in all competitions, the way he plays is outstanding, he keeps it very simple but very effective.

"So, I've been very impressed with the two."

Miguel Cardoso's charges will play the first leg of the Champions League final against Pyramids FC at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, with the second leg set to take place next Sunday in Cairo.

Mokoena won the PSL Footballer of the Season and Midfielder of the Season in 2022/23, while Allende is still searching for his first major individual accolade.

There has been an argument that the Chilean is underrated and does not get the recognition he deserves.

However, competition for major awards, at least domestically, will be fierce, with Ribeiro high up there, having scored 19 goals and contributed 13 assists in all competitions.

Iqraam Rayners from the same club also had a memorable season, with 21 goals and nine assists in all tournaments.

Mofokeng, meanwhile, has scored 12 goals and assisted 14 for Bucs.
