Revealed: What's dragging Cape Town clubs down

A Cape Town native football legend has identified the key issues he believes are holding back the growth of pro clubs in that neck of the woods, with Cape Town City and Cape Town Spurs both struggling.

Last season, Spurs suffered relegation from the elite division and with two games remaining in the second tier are in danger of dropping further down.

As if that not to be outdone, Cape Town City are staring the dreaded drop in the eye and look set for the promotion/relegation play-offs against the two Motsepe Foundation Championship sides to have finished second and third.

"It is a cause for concern," notes Thabo Mngomeni, who traces his roots to the oldest township in the Western Cape, Langa.

"These teams should learn from others about what they are doing right. These clubs need to engage with the communities in all the townships and hold events to promote their teams.

"The people of Cape Town love football, make no mistake. If we can only put the right people in the right positions.

"I understand we can't expect the clubs to play PSL matches in the townships, the stadiums in the townships are not suitable for professional matches. All our best stadiums are located in the city.

"Athlone Stadium is an exception because it's centrally located between the townships and the city.

"But clubs can still reach out to the townships, perhaps by supporting schools with children's programmes.

"They need to bring their clubs closer to the people and avoid hiring 'yes-men'. Instead, they should recruit individuals who are not afraid to challenge management on certain decisions," adds Mngomeni, who started his pro career at Spurs in 1990.

The Citizens visit Polokwane City up next on 17 May, while the Urban Warriors will also be away to Hungry Lions this Sunday.
