Former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates head coach Augusto Palacios cautions the emerging generation of Premier Soccer League players against succumbing to off-the-field temptations.

The DStv Premiership has recently witnessed the rise of new talent hailing from the streets of South Africa, a talent that many fear could be derailed by alcohol and a lack of discipline.

Luke Baartman, Siyabonga Mabena, Mduduzi Shabalala, and Relebohile Mofokeng are the latest young sensations captivating the nation.

Palacios emphasizes that for these youngsters to realize their full potential, they must be handled with care, like being wrapped in cotton wool.

"It's heartening to witness clubs adopting a youth policy these days; it aids in developing a player within the club's culture, philosophy, and history, ultimately saving them money," he tells KickOff.

"Furthermore, it allows a player to benefit from exposure to a higher level. If Baartman has already experienced the opportunity to play against formidable teams, there's no reason not to continue giving him playing time.

"One of the most significant mistakes coaches make with these young talents is not fielding them against top-tier teams.

"I find joy in witnessing clubs placing their trust in young players. That's the purpose of having a DDC team.

"I extend my congratulations to all the teams that are incorporating young players; indeed, we possess talent in this country.

"The only way to safeguard these players is to keep them on the pitch, maintaining their playing time and ensuring continuity.

"Effective communication between the player's family and the club is crucial.

"The guidance provided should cover various aspects, including their salaries, professional football, education, substance abuse, and relationships.

"Once these young players start receiving senior contract salaries, they become susceptible to the influence of friends and relationships. This is the stage where they need guidance."
