Liverpool thrash Luton to open four-point lead

Liverpool opened a four-point lead at the top of the Premier League table after rallying from behind to defeat Luton Town 4-1 on Wednesday evening.

Jurgen Klopp made five changes from the win over Brentford, as Jarrell Quansah, Joe Gomez, Ryan Gravenberch, Harvey Elliott and Cody Gakpo were brought into the side.

Luis Diaz was proving to be a handful for the Luton defence in the early stages of the first half, but he was let down by his finishing in the box as they pushed for an early goal.

Anfield was silenced after 12 minutes when Chiedozie Ogbene bagged his third league goal of the campaign by nodding home into an empty net after Tahith Chong's initial strike was saved by goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

The Reds were already cut thin in the attack without Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez and despite dominating possession for most of the half, they failed to trouble Luton shot-stopper Thomas Kaminski.

That all changed ten minutes into the second half when skipper Virgil van Dijk brought the Reds level with a clinical header from Elliot's corner.

The Reds bagged the second goal three minutes later when Alexis Mac Allister raced onto a long throw and picked out Cody Gakpo with a powerful cross, before the latter sent a powerful header into the back of the net.

The third goal arrived in the 71st minute when some good work by Andrew Robertson ended with Diaz picking up the ball and drifting into the box, before firing past Kaminski at the near post.

The third goal was enough to knock the wind out of Luton's sail, as Klopp's charges bagged fourth goal in the 90th minute courtesy of a powerful finish from Elliot to wrap up a good win.
