The six-time Ballon d'Or winner put Barca ahead from the penalty spot in the first half and in doing so match Raul's decade-old record of having scored in the competition in 17 consecutive calendar years, according to Opta.
Messi, who is the UCL's second-highest goalscorer of all-time, netted his first goal in the tournament back in 2005 and has scored at least once for the Blaugrana in every year since.
That return has seen him draw level with the former Los Blancos skipper who scored in each calendar year between 1995 and 2011, with his final goal coming during a stint with Bundesliga side Schalke 04.
The Argentine forward has scored 119 goals in the competition in total, second only to long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo who has netted 134 times across spells with Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus.
