Downs exhaust quota and black out four for CWC

Mamelodi Sundowns have exhausted their tournament allocation registration for the 2025 FIFA World Cup ahead of the start of the global competition.

FIFA has released squads for all 32 teams with Sundowns one of only five clubs that have chosen to submit a list of 35.

Boca Juniors (Argentina), Flamengo (Brazil), Juventus (Italy), and Al Hilal (Saudi Arabia) are the other clubs in that category.

The world governing body’s regulations for the competition in USA allow for clubs to have between 26-35 players registered, which had to be submitted upon the close of the special transfer window on June 10.

All clubs must have three goalkeepers in their final list, which was cut down cut from the provisional squad submitted earlier.

For Sundowns, they have left behind Terrence Mashego, Kegan Johannes, Thapelo Maseko, Zuko Mdunyelwa, Matias Esquivel, Sanele Tshabalala, Thato Sibiya, and Ntando Nkosi, though they are all registered.

They are all still eligible and can travel should circumstances force the club to do so, though Maseko and Esquivel could be leaving.

The Brazilians have four players not registered at all and these are Jody February, Lucas Suarez, Kobamelo Kodisang, and the injured Asekho Tiwani.

February was cut out with the club only able to register three goalkeepers.

With Suarez, he has cut short his loan at Chloorkop and returned to parent club CA Talleres, who will play in the Torneo Clausura from July 17 until December 14 and have a new coach, Diego Cocca.

Kodisang is linked with a move away after struggling to make an impact in his first season back from Portugal.

Tiwani was injured at the Under-20 AFCON.
