Pep pays tribute to Pique after retirement decision

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has paid tribute to his former defender Gerard Pique, who announced his surprise retirement this week.

The 35-year-old on Thursday announced that Saturday's game against Almeria will be his last for the Catalan giants.

Guardiola was the manager of Barcelona when Pique was re-signed in 2008 from Manchester United, before he went on to enjoy an incredible career at the Camp Nou.

"It was surprising news,' Guardiola said, as per Daily Mail.

"He was here in England at a young age and after he made an incredible career at Barcelona.

"I wish him all the best. I know his mum and dad, incredible human being – he personality, a player for the big games.

"He never missed one, always performed in a high level. This is what top clubs need.

"The future will be bright because he is a smart guy. It was an honour for me to be his manager."
