Rampant Man Utd advance to Europa League final

Manchester United advanced to the UEFA Europa League final after thrashing Athletic Bilbao 4-1 in the second leg of their semi-final on Thursday night.

United coach Ruben Amorim went with the same side that started the 3-0 win in the first leg seven days ago, while the Spanish outfit were without attacking duo Nico and Inaki Williams.

Bilbao unsurprisingly saw a lot more of the ball in the early stages of the first half in search of their first goal of the tie, with Alex Berenguer going closest inside the opening 15 minutes with a shot from inside the area.

The visitors got their reward in the 31st minute when a loose ball fell kindly into the path of Mikel Jauregizar, who was afforded time and space to find the top corner with a lovely curling strike from 25 yards out.

The Red Devils should have been back on level terms shortly before the break when Alejandro Garnacho was played through on goal by Patrik Dorgu but with only goalkeeper Julen Agirrezabala to beat, the winger sent his effort wide of the upright.

There was no improvement in the situation for United after the break, which prompted Amorim to make a triple change on the hour mark by throwing on Amad Diallo, Luke Shaw and Mason Mount.

United's nerves were calmed down with just under 20 minutes to play when Mount got the equaliser with a lovely turn and finish on the edge of the box after some good work by Lenny Yoro.

The home side then took the lead on 80 minutes when Casemiro got on the end of Bruno Fernandes' free-kick and sent a glancing header beyond Agirrezabala for his second goal over the two legs.

Rasmus Hojlund rounded off the scoring five minutes later when Rasmus Hojlund got his sixth goal in the competition by turning home a cross from Dialo, before Mount added his second in stoppage time with a superb effort from around 40 yards to seal the team's spot on the final to make it 4-1 on the night and 7-1 on aggregate.
