Baroka's 101 on not buying or selling PSL status

Baroka FC have once again demonstrated why they are one of the best-run clubs outside the Betway Premiership. Here's a look!

The story

Often considered a yo-yo club, Baroka remains an unforgettable name in South African football.

The Limpopo-based side have spent six seasons in the top flight since 2016, with their most recent appearance in the 2021/22 season.

Impressively, they have spent a significant period in the upper tiers of Mzansi football without purchasing the status of an existing top team — a trend unfortunately all too common over the years.

One could argue this is testament to the club being well-managed and financially sustainable through its owners and stakeholders.

Resources and sponsorships are not a major issue for Baroka, with the club boasting its own multi-purpose facility called Baroka Village.

This week, the club announced a new headline sponsorship deal with the Mafori Group.

The announcement coincided with the unveiling of their 2025/26 home and away kits, which now feature the Mafori Group logo on the front.

While many second-tier clubs struggle to secure commercial partnerships, Baroka appear to be on top of things in terms of resources and sponsorship.

This has translated into consistent on-pitch performances, as they remain a steady source of talent without ever suffering relegation to non-professional football.
