Man Utd's three-game winning run ended at Newcastle

Manchester United's three-match winning run in the Premier League came to an end with a 1-0 loss to Newcastle United on Saturday evening.

Kobbie Mainoo made a second league start for United, who named Rasmus Hojlund and Victor Lindelof on the bench while starting Diogo Dalot, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Anthony Martial.

Following a difficult opening, Manchester looked to make the breakthrough from Scott Mctominay's ball to Alejandro Garnacho out wide but Nick Pope closed the angle.

Newcastle still enjoyed the bulk of the momentum and drew a point-blank save from Andre Onana following a Miguel Almiron's first-time strike.

The Magpies continued being relentless where a slight nudge from Harry Maguire shortly thereafter directed Alexander Isak's snap shot away from goal and denied them the lead.

Newcastle were inches close again ten minutes ahead of halftime when a pin-point free-kick outside the area by Kieran Trippier left Onana rooted and hit the underside of the crossbar.

Eddie Howe's men persisted with the large spell of momentum following the second half through Tino Livramento, Anthony Gordon, Almiron and Isak.

The deadlock followed ten minutes in the second half after Anthony Gordon ran in behind Wan-Bissaka at the back-post and tapped in Trippier's cross-field pass.

Manchester produced a double change following the set-back, with Hojlund in for Martial before Antony slotted in the place of Marcus Rashford.

However, the Magpies remained compact on all fronts and didn't show any cracking signs as United began to push numbers in search of a turnaround.

Newcastle's goalkeeper Pope didn't finish the match after picking up a knock and was replaced by Martin Dubravka.

The Red Devils appeared to have levelled off a half-volley from Antony following a corner, but it was disallowed after the ball hit Maguire before bouncing off Dubravka on-route to the net.

Newcastle were able to see out the final minutes to secure maximum points and move fifth on the table ahead of the Red Devils.
