Teenager seals dramatic win for Liverpool

Teenager Rio Ngumoha scored in the dying stages of the clash to earn Liverpool a 3-2 win over Newcastle United at St James' Park on Monday night.

Reds manager Arne Slot made two changes from the win over AFC Bournemouth as Jeremie Frimpong and Alexis Mac Allister made way for Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones.

The game's first real opening arrived after 13 minutes when Hugo Ekitike played in Florian Wirtz, who took one touch in the box before unleashing a curling strike that was palmed away by goalkeeper Nick Pope.

Anthony Gordon was lively for Newcastle in the number nine role and he had two opportunities in the midway period, as he nodded over the crossbar on 27 minutes before his first-time volley was saved by Alisson Becker a few minutes later.

The hosts were made to rue those missed openings as the Reds took the lead in the 35th minute courtesy of a well-taken long range strike from Ryan Gravenberch that left Pope flat-footed on the goal line.

The Magpies were reduced to ten players just before the halftime break when the referee gave Gordon a straight red card for a dangerous tackle on Virgil van Dijk following a VAR review.

Liverpool took full advantage just after the interval when Ekitike continued his scoring run for the hosts with a lovely finish that hit the upright and sailed into the back of the net.

The deficit was halved on 58 minutes when Bruno Guimaraes got on the end of Tino Livramento's cross and headed past Alisson at the far post to set up a lively finish to the game.

The ten men of Newcastle did get back on level terms in the 88th minute after a long-ball over the top released substitute William Osula, who managed to fire past the advancing Alisson.

However, Liverpool had the final say when a neat passing move ended with Mohamed Salah's pass finding Ngumoha, who sent a curling finish beyond Pope in the 10th minute of time added on.
