Carabao Cup Wrap

Liverpool beat Leicester City 5-4 on penalties to book a spot in the Carabao Cup semi-finals after it ended 3-3 in regulation time on Wednesday.

The Reds showed quite a few new faces from Sunday's 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League, but Jordan Henderson and Roberto Firmino started.

Leicester had the tried and tested and were ahead inside the first 15 minutes through a double from Jamie Vardy before Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain brought the Reds back in a blistering opening spell.

With a comeback on the line, James Maddison applied a scorching top corner finish late in the first half to put the Foxes on an even comfortable pedestal.

Liverpool then turned to Diogo Jota, Naby Keita and James Milner and it was the former that got them a second before Takumi Minamino levelled at the death to take the game to a shoot-out.

During the shoot-out, both sides missed one of their five kicks and it went into sudden-death which the Reds won after Jota converted the winning kick whilst the Foxes missed theirs.

Chelsea put in a gutsy performance with largely a second-string team to brush Brentford City aside 2-0 for a spot in the semi-finals.

A depleted Blues, who missed many regulars partly to the Covid-19 pandemic, debuted three youngsters such as Harvey Vale, Xavier Simons and Jude Soonsup-Bell.

Thomas Tuchel's men endured a torrid but frustrating time throughout the encounter and needed an own-goal from defender Pontus Jansson and penalty from Jorginho to get them over the line.

Tottenham Hotspur scraped into the semi-finals with a 2-1 victory over West Ham United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to continue their improvement under Antonio Conte.

Forward Harry Kane, Heung-Min Son and Dele Alli didn't start following Sunday's showdown with Liverpool, with Steven Bergwijn amongst others afforded a chance.

The Dutchman rewarded Conte's trust in him when he netted inside the opening spell of the game before Jarrod Bowen clawed the Hammers level.

It remained level for just two minutes though as Lucas Moura restored advantage for the host, who then held onto their slender lead to oust the Hammers from the tournament.
