Carabao Cup Final Report: Manchester City v Tottenham Hotspur 25 April 2021

Man City made six changes, with shot-stopper Zack Steffen, Joao Cancelo, Fernandinho, Raheem Sterling, Aymeric Laporte and Kevin De Bruyne all coming in while Harry Kane was passed fit to start for Spurs after an ankle injury.

City were causing Tottenham all sorts of problems in the early exchanges, with Phil Foden and Sterling coming close within the first eight minutes.

Foden had a chance to beak the deadlock for the Citizens in the 26th minute after pouncing on a loose ball inside the box but goalkeeper Hugo Lloris showed great reflexes to deny the midfielder.

Riyad Mahrez came close to giving Pep Guardiola's troops the lead ten minutes before the break after cutting inside the box from the right wing and curled a strike towards the far post that missed just wide.

Cancelo also had a chance to give the Citizens the lead on the stroke of half-time after receiving a cross from Mahrez on the edge of the box and curled a strike towards the near post that was tipped into the woodwork by Lloris.

The Lilywhites had a bright start in the second stanza, as two minutes from the break Giovanni Lo Celso came close to breaking the deadlock with a curling strike from the edge of the box that was parried away by Steffen towards the bottom corner.

After a slow first half, Ryan Mason made a double change for Spurs by bringing on Gareth Bale in place of Lucas Moura while Moussa Sissolo came on for Lo Celso.

Mahrez came close to breaking the deadlock for City in the last quarter of an hour after surging through the middle and unleased a powerful shot that was tipped away by Lloris with a strong hand.

Laporte finally sent Guardiola's charges ahead in the last eight minutes with a header at the back post, rising above Sissoko to flick it past Lloris after a good free-kick by De Bruyne.

Mahrez had a goal ruled out for offside for the Citizens in stoppage time, but the one goal was enough as the Citizens held on to retain the trophy for the fourth consecutive season.
