The manner of the result, however, could not have been worse for South Africa, as they squandered a two-goal lead by conceding two penalties within eight minutes to end the game in a draw.
The draw secured Uganda the top spot in the group, while Algeria finished second, ahead of Bafana on goal difference.
While it was complete calamity for Molefi Ntseki’s side, it was pandemonium for the Uganda Cranes.
There were jubilant scenes at full-time, and reports suggest that many Ugandans took to the streets to celebrate both the result and their team’s progression to the knockout stages of CHAN 2024.
The Ugandan government added to the excitement by hinting at a potential public holiday to mark the historic achievement, as it is the first time the national team has progressed beyond the group stage of CHAN.
After the match, the government’s official page on X, State House Uganda, wrote: "Public Holiday?"
