A legendary figure at Al Ahly has reportedly taken aim at the club’s current head coach, Jose Riveiro, despite a strong start to the 2025/26 campaign.
The Spanish tactician took over the reins in May, succeeding veteran Swiss manager Marcel Koller, who left after a highly successful stint that included at least 11 trophies with the Egyptian giants.

Riveiro arrived at the Red Devils after a trophy-laden spell in South Africa, where he led Orlando Pirates to five titles. However, his accolades seem to have done little to impress some of the club’s past icons.
According to Elbalad, Egyptian football legend Magdi Abdelghani believes that Riveiro has already failed to meet expectations since taking charge of the club.
So far this season, Ahly have played two matches in the Egyptian Premier League, recording one win and one draw, results that place them second in the table.
The 49-year-old tactician also led the team in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, where the 12-time CAF Champions League winners were eliminated in the group stage after one loss and two draws.
Abdelghani reportedly stated that Riveiro is not the right fit for Ahly and even labelled both Riveiro and Mosimane as "too weak" to manage a club of Ahly’s stature, a surprising remark considering Mosimane's success at the club.

The South African coach enjoyed a highly decorated spell with the Red Castle, winning two CAF Champions League titles and bolstering his legacy after an already impressive run with Mamelodi Sundowns.
According to the same report, Abdelghani insisted that Riveiro should feel privileged to be at Ahly, arguing that the club "creates coaches" and suggesting that Mosimane only gained continental recognition after managing the Egyptian giants.
