Mokwena's credentials questioned by Egypt legend

Egyptian football legend Ahmed Shobair has raised doubts about South African coach Rulani Mokwena's credentials amid reports linking him to Zamalek SC.

Mokwena was recently let go by Wydad Athletic Club, with the Moroccan giants citing his tenure as a disappointment, despite securing a third-place finish in the Botola Pro League.

Since his departure from the three-time CAF Champions League winners, the 38-year-old tactician has been consistently linked with a move to the White Knights, with reports claiming that the two parties are in advanced talks.

Mokwena has earned recognition as one of Africa’s top coaches, mainly due to his success with Mamelodi Sundowns, where he clinched league titles and the inaugural African Football League trophy.

However, Shobair, highly regarded as one of Egypt’s most respected football figures, has voiced opposition to Mokwena’s potential appointment at Zamalek, questioning his track record and overall achievements at previous clubs.

"The truth is that Rulani Mokwena's name was mentioned to coach Zamalek in the past two days, but based on what? Can someone give me?' Shobier, who is now a journalist, asked per Shorouknews.com.

"He won the African League title with Sundowns, but he left for Morocco's Wydad Casablanca without achieving any success.

"In my opinion, these are just the words of the agents and they bring them up normally, and this happens, but I think that Zamalek officials are not thinking about Mokwena.

"Calm down a bit on this Gray team, Zamalek's greatest achievement was made by an Egyptian coach. I'll ask a question, You brought in Ayman El Ramady and he played three matches, drew two, won one, and in the last match against Petrojet his fingerprints started to show on the team," he continued.

"You brought him mainly for the Pyramids match in the Egypt Cup final, so what if El Ramady wins the tournament, will he stay? Here you find someone who tells you no he won't stay," added the former Al Ahly shot-stopper.

"Why, man? Because he's Egyptian. Wow, your greatest achievements are with an Egyptian coach, Captain Mahmoud Abu Rigila, and also with Captain Mahmoud El Gohary. Yes, Al-Ahly and Zamalek have foreign coaches, but that's not the law. So calm down a bit and let Al-Ramadi get to work."
