Discipline issue confronts Kaizer Chiefs

Though Kaizer Chiefs will be pleased with their start to the season, which has seen the side collect 10 out of a possible 12 points, one area remains of concern to head coach Nasreddine Nabi.

Chiefs earned a credible draw against defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns at FNB Stadium on Wednesday, though will feel the game was there for the taking having created several scoring chances either side of the half-time whistle.

The result arrested a three-game winning streak that saw Stellenbosch FC, Polokwane City and Richards Bay FC falling to the Glamour Boys.

So impressive have the Soweto giants been that they are being mentioned in conversations regarding the likely destination of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership trophy.

For a side that finished ninth last term, this is a sign of definite improvement.

However, the latest yellow cards and suspensions update from the PSL paints a cloudy picture of on-field ill-discipline that may prove costly in a season where there is CAF Confederation Cup football to factor in.

At 13, Amakhosi have the longest list of players who have been cautioned so far this season.

Aden McCarthy and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo have had their names scribbled in the referee’s black book twice, while 11 other players have been yellow-carded once.

Chiefs started the season on a clean slate on the yellows front, with only four of their players (Ashley Du Preez, Inacio Miguel, Thabiso Monyane, and Mfundo Vilakazi) getting mention in the first PSL yellow cards and suspensions update of the season on 11 August.

This was just after the opening round of fixtures for the new season.

Rivals Orlando Pirates have five players sitting on either one yellow card or two, while Mamelodi Sundowns have eight.

Nabi’s troops next travel to Durban to face Golden Arrows at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday (17:30).
