Slovakian striker Pavol Safranko joined Sundowns in 2021, However, the towering forward didn’t spend much time at the club. After his stint with the Brazilians, Safranko returned to Europe, signing with Romanian side Sepsi OSK.
Matias Esquivel, who arrived from Argentine side Lanus, added a touch of South American flair to the Sundowns midfield. Despite his promise, the attacking midfielder seemingly failed to meet expectations and has since been loaned out to Greek outfit Kifisia FC, marking the second time the club has sent him abroad.
South African winger Kobamelo Kodisang, who had previously spent time in Portugal, joined Masandawana in July 2024, showing great potential. However, with limited game time due to the team’s star-studded attack, he has now been loaned out to Portuguese club AVS Futebol for the new season.
Meanwhile, Lucas Suarez joined Downs on loan from Argentine club CA Talleres as an experienced defender. His time in the PSL, however, proved largely underwhelming. He has since returned to South America, joining Uruguayan side Liverpool FC on a season-long loan with an option to buy from Talleres.
Another high-profile South American import was Bolivian international Erwin Saavedra, who arrived at the Tshwane giants with big expectations and a strong reputation.
Unfortunately, recurring injuries prevented him from making a meaningful impact in the PSL. Saavedra has since returned to his former club, Bolivar in Bolivia.
South African centre-back Rushine De Reuck, once a key figure in Downs' solid defense and a player for Bafana Bafana, is another recent departure. After thriving in the PSL, he chose to test himself abroad and joined Tanzanian giants Simba SC, where he now plays under coach Fadlu Davids.
