How Chiefs have fared in derbies with a week's rest

With Kaizer Chiefs enjoying a week's rest ahead of the Nedbank Cup final against rivals Orlando Pirates, KickOff reveals whether it is an advantage or not after Jose Riveiro's men played on Tuesday.

Chiefs go into the cup final on Saturday carrying the extra pressure of having no midweek fixture, as expectations will be that they should be the fresher of the two sides.

Not so for Bucs, who grinded out a 2-1 win over Golden Arrows in the Betway Premiership on Tuesday, albeit with a much changed line-up.

In hindsight, however, the latter have actually performed well and had the upper hand in Soweto derbies, at least from last season, when they had midweek games before the blockbuster event.

Last season, in the league's first round clash, Pirates had a midweek encounter prior to the derby, where they edged Sekhukhune United 1-0 and went on to beat their arch-rivals by the same scoreline four days later.

In the reverse fixture, they actually had only two days' rest ahead of the derby after drawing 1-1 with Cape Town Spurs but went on to edge Chiefs in a five-goal thriller.

Even in last Saturday's 2-1 win, the men in Black and Red had only two days' rest before locking horns with Nasreddine Nabi's troops last weekend, following a 1-0 loss to Sekhukhune.

The Glamour Boys, on the other hand, seem to have enjoyed a week's rest before the derby without any results, as they did not have a midweek fixture prior to the first derby of this season in February.
This was preceded by a 4-0 drubbing of Free Agents FC in the Nedbank Cup, yet they went on to lose narrowly to the Buccaneers.

They were also spared midweek exertions before last weekend's derby, smarting at the Naturena Village for a week after a 2-1 loss to Marumo Gallants but could not avoid a 2-1 defeat to the CAF Champions League semi-finalists.
