EXPLAINED: Why Webber's value dropped after USA move

It has now been revealed why Jamie Webber’s market value has dramatically dropped despite his recent move from Sekhukhune United to the United States.

Two months ago, FC Tulsa announced the signing of Webber from Sekhukhune in a deal worth $500,000 (approximately R9 million).

It was a landmark move by all accounts, as Webber became the most valuable player in the USL Championship, the second tier of football in the USA.

At the time, his market value stood at €1 million (R20 million).

However, following a recent valuation update by Transfermarkt, Webber is now worth €500,000, marking a significant 50% drop in his value.

Transfermarkt explains that the situation surrounding the South African is somewhat more nuanced.

Although the 27-year-old joined for a club-record fee, the amount paid was below his previous valuation. Given his age, it is considered unlikely he will command a high resale value in future.

This is the main reason his market value has decreased, Transfermarkt explains.

Nevertheless, Webber is now the second-most valuable player in the US second tier.

The Cape Town-born star has already made three appearances for FC Tulsa.
