SA star racing against time for Ligue 1 play-off decider

A South African star is now said to be in a race against time ahead of a crucial clash that could secure his club a promotion play-off spot in France's top flight.

This coming weekend, South African footballer Lebogang Phiri could help his side Guingamp qualify for the Ligue 1 promotion play-offs.

Guingamp currently sit fifth in the Ligue 2 standings ahead of the final league game of the season.

A victory for Phiri's side against Pau would guarantee them a play-off spot without relying on other results from teams below them.

In Ligue 2, third place, fourth place and fifth place face off in a playoff clash where the winner ends up playing the 18th place team in the French top division to secure a spot in next season's Ligue 1.

However, Phiri may miss Guingamp's important season finale.

According to French newspaper Ouest France, Phiri missed training on Wednesday due to a calf injury.

This has cast significant doubt over the midfielder's availability for the weekend, and he may not be able to add to his 16 Ligue 2 appearances this term.

Notably, Phiri's contract with the club expires at the end of June, and it is unclear whether it will be renewed.

Now in his second stint at Guingamp, the 30-year-old has made a total of 115 appearances for the club, with Danish side Brøndby being the only team he has featured for more, with 145 matches.
