Ndlovu: I bought clothes with my first cheque

In this edition of My First Pay Cheque, KickOff speaks with Pretoria Callies goalkeeper King Ndlovu.

The 32-year-old has established himself as a prominent player, having played for Maritzburg United, Marumo Gallants FC, Black Leopards, and Jomo Cosmos.

Ndlovu shares how he spent his very first salary in professional football, treating himself to new clothes.

At which club did you receive your first pay cheque?

"I was at Roses United in 2013 when I received my first pay cheque. They recruited me from Soshanguve Sunshine. It was a one-year contract."

How much was it?

"It was R5000, and that was back in 2013. It was a small amount; there wasn’t much I could do with that money."

How did you celebrate?

"I bought myself a t-shirt, a shirt, and a pair of jeans. I took my girlfriend to a restaurant where I spent R500 on food. For clothes, I spent R1500. I also bought a snapback cap. Oh, those were the days!"

What happened to the rest of the money? Did it last the whole month?

"It lasted maybe 15 days. I stayed in the clubhouse and relied on the food provided there. I didn't do much else."
