How I Became A Goalkeeper: Vusimuzi Yashe

In our exciting feature How I Became A Goalkeeper, KickOff catches up with former Umtata Bush Bucks goalkeeper Vusimuzi Yashe.

Yashe, who also played for AmaZulu FC and Platinum Stars, says by becoming a goalkeeper he was following in his father's footsteps

"I was born and raised in Mthatha, on the village side," He tells KickOff.

"I was seven years old when I became interested in goalkeeping, at the age of nine I was already playing for the Under 12s.

"I was always a goalkeeper, the influence came from my father who was also a goalkeeper.

"For me, it started at training where we would pick anyone to go and stand in goals. We would take shots and he'd try to stop them going in. And in most cases, I was the one who enjoyed that role.

"I then joined a team called Ratanang Mangothobane in Mthatha, they were playing in the old NFD, and because I was 14 at the time I couldn't be registered with the league so I used someone's card to play.

"When referees came closer to check mine, I would jump around pretending to be warming my body up, just to prevent him from having a good look at my face [laughs]. Those days were the days of the Inland and Coastal Streams. Things were not as professional as they are today.

"After that, I joined Mthatha Liverpool, that's where I played with the likes Nigel Dixon, and Sisa Nombe. That's where Bushbucks Bucks found me. Around 1997. In 2004 I signed I signed with Bloemfontein Celtic.

"The goalkeepers I grew up following were the likes of Jorge Campos from Mexico, the colorful goalkeeper from the 1994 World Cup. He used to wear the number 9.

"Locally I used to like Merikani Mpangi, Jesper Emaviwe, the reflexes, their style was more like mine.

"At the moment my biggest favorite is the Brazillian from Manchester City Ederson, and here at home I still believe in Itumeleng Khune, I can also add Denis Onyango."
