Middendorp's right-hand man on his future

Cape Town Spurs assistant coach Benson Mhlongo has given an update on his future with the club following the tragedy that was the 2024/25 season for them in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Spurs finished the campaign as the basement dwellers with 30 points from the same number of games and look set for life in the ABC Motsepe League.

Their relegation status has, however, not yet been confirmed by the PSL, despite their case against Durban City being dismissed by a SAFA arbitrator.

Mhlongo, who joined the club on a short-term deal, has urged his staff and players to support neighbors Cape Town City during the promotion/relegation play-offs.

The Citizens finished 15th in the topflight and therefore will be contesting in the play-offs together with Orbit College and Casric Stars from the second tier.

According to the former Mamelodi Sundowns captain, who also holds the position of coordinator and player development manager at [SAFPU, Cape Town deserves to have more than one team in the elite league.

"Nothing has been said yet by the management about the future. The only thing now is to support Cape Town City in the playoffs," he says.

"The Western Cape can't afford to lose another team. If that happens, what will happen to these young boys' future?

"It's important for City to stay in the Betway Premiership. It gives these young boys hope. And for the Union part, City needs to stay up.

"My call is for the Cape Town Spurs players to support City. We are not part of the politics. As footballers, we have to support each other.

"At this stage, our club has not issued an official announcement regarding what's next. In the meantime, as the Players Union we will be happy if we at least have two teams in the Western Cape, including Stellenbosch FC.

"We need to have top-tier teams in all nine provinces. As the Union coordinator, I'm urging our clients in the Western Cape to support Cape Town City.

"It's for their good since City is their closest franchise. I'm looking after the interest of the players that I mentor and groom."

The play-offs get underway on Wednesday with a clash between the two lower division sides, and will go on until June 28.
