Masilela: SuperSport did their homework

Mamelodi Sundowns legend Joel "Fire" Masilela was pleased with the way cross-town rivals SuperSport United came prepared for the Tshwane Derby on Tuesday.

United fought back to hold the defending champions 1-1 in what was an action-packed DStv Premiership encounter at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

"SuperSport United played well yesterday, they gave us a run for our money. All this time they've done their homework very well, hence they managed to maintain us," Masilela tells KickOff.

"But you're not gonna win or play all your games the way you want to, I've seen this happening to the best teams in the world, teams like FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. So, it wasn't a surprise. Gavin Hunt and his technical team had a great plan and it worked.

"I think tactically and practically, they did very well, I'll give them a huge credit for that because they stuck to their guns and did not allow Sundowns to dominate every ball. That's what they did very well, they were holding the ball very well, and they took the game to us, which was good for them. Practically they were spot on.

"SuperSport United are happy to get a draw, they should be proud of themselves for getting a draw against us. And us, we are not happy with the draw, that's because it's something we are not used to. At Sundowns, we're always looking to win our games, and we want to win them convincingly.

"So, for us, it's time to go back to the drawing board again so that the boys can try to maintain that winning culture again."

The former winger also touched on some of the questionable refereeing decisions from last night's match.

"Our referees are not consistent, so people shouldn't accuse other clubs of benefitting from those poor decisions. We never had consistency from the referees, to be honest. They haven't been good this season. The poor decisions we saw yesterday are not new in our game.

"Sundowns are just doing well, it's not like they get favours from the referees. So far, we haven't lost any match.

"People who think we are benefitting... well, that's their opinion. The way I see it, it's poor refereeing."
