Mahlangu: I had doubts about Basadien

Mamelodi Sundowns legend Sello "Page" Mahlangu admits he had some doubts about the Brazilians signing left-back Fawaaz Basadien.

The 28-year-old has joined Mamelodi Sundowns from fellow Premier Soccer League club Stellenbosch FC.

The former Moroka Swallows defender was one of the standout performers for Stellenbosch last season, but he will now face competition for his position from players like Aubrey Modiba, Divine Lunga, and Terrence Mashego in the star-studded Sundowns squad.

"Basadien's signing serves as a replacement for the Argentine Lucas Suarez, who has since moved on. It’s about replacing experience with experience," Mahlangu told KickOff.

"Basadien is a good signing for Sundowns, but the question remains whether he can effectively contribute to playing out from the back. Personally, I first had doubts about his ability in that regard, but I believe he is a good signing for the club.

"While he is solid as a stopper, there is a significant difference between defending and building play from the back. Additionally, we have players like Mothobi Mvala who can also play in that position.

"Only time will tell if he can integrate well into this Sundowns team. That said, he is a very good acquisition and has been a consistent performer. He was a regular player at Stellenbosch, and we look forward to his first game. Let's hope he can bring the flair that is typically seen in Sundowns' style of play."
