Where Downs stand with Mashego after Basadien arrival

After Mamelodi Sundowns landed their prime target for a left-back Fawaaz Basadien, with Terrence Mashego not in their plans for 2025/26 season, would they be open to sell Mashego to Kaizer Chiefs?

Basadien became Sundowns' first signing for the upcoming campaign, becoming the fifth left-back on The Brazilians' books, including Aubrey Modiba, Divine Lunga, Asekho Tiwani and Mashego.

Mashego being released to the Bafana Bafana African Nations Championship (CHAN) squad by the Tshwane giants is a clear indication that he is not in the plans of head coach Miguel Cardoso, as the tournament will run parallel with the PSL new season.

Chiefs reportedly showed interest in the former Cape Town City left-back during the off-season with his contract about to expire at the end of June but Sundowns triggered a one-year option on his deal.

With the 29-year-old unlikely to feature for the perennial champions in the upcoming season, Masandawana could lose him for free at the end of the campaign.

Mashego was diplomatic when asked if Chiefs are circling for his services.

"I have an agent and also I'm still contracted to Sundowns, they are the ones dealing with everything. My job is to report to training and games, the rumours are (dealt with) by my agent," Mashego said on Soccerbeat YouTube Channel.

"Of course I had a discussion with my agent, how are we going to approach this season, last season I played few games, what are we going to do this season.

"So far we had a talk, the plans we had was, 'Go and play CHAN and after the CHAN competition we'll see what's going to happen'," Mashego added.

Bafana have scheduled group matches against Algeria, Guinea, Niger and Uganda from next weekend in the CHAN tournament that will conclude at the end of August.

With question marks on whether Amakhosi are settled at left-back position despite the signing of Nkanyiso Shinga and Paseka Mako, the Soweto giants or any other suitor have until 22 September to negotiate for the transfer of Mashego with Masandawana.
