In this edition of My Muti Story, we hear from Mamelodi Sundowns legend Sello "Page" Mahlangu who reveals how Muti helped a former Chiefs striker score goals.
Who and where?
"Those things do exist in football, but it all depends on who is in charge of that muti.
"Take it from me I saw black magic happen before my eyes. At some stage, I remember at Sundowns our muti working against us. We were playing against Vaal Professionals FC and the late Spear Makhoba brought us impepho.
"It's smoke almost killed us that day. In the first 20 minutes, all we could see was mist.
"While we were still lost in that mist, Vaal Professionals scored two goals in the first half.
"During half time our coach Screamer Tshabalala begged us to forget about impepho and concentrate on our abilities.
"That was the last time I saw muti being used at Sundowns. It did not work.
"At the amateur level, it is where I can say I saw it work with my own two eyes.
"The late Fortune Koloba played for a team called Tembisa White Birds in our Kasi.
"He could score from any position. From corner kicks, from the centreline, he could score with anything from anywhere.
"He was the only player at that club who didn't share his socks with any teammate. He was scoring a lot of goals. It was unbelievable."
Why were you doing it?
"We didn't ask any questions; we didn't want to backbite Bra Screamer."
Who was the muti man?
"Spear Makhoba was our muti man. He is the one who brought all the ingredients, remember he was a close friend of Bra Screamer and Trott Moloto."
What did you have to do?
"We just had to abstain from sex. Remember those days we only camped for away matches. All those who didn't abstain from sex before the match were asked to excuse themselves from the team. That is why you often hear stories like a certain player will no longer be starting because of an injury he sustained during a warm-up blah blah blah. That is the excuse they often use to cover those things."
Did everyone take part?
"Yes, everybody did."
What stood out?
"To see the Sundowns management and technical team members realising the muti thing was not working that day against Vaal Professionals."
What was the result?
"We lost 3-1 to Vaal Professionals."
