Mamkhize's football dreams didn't die with Royal AM

With controversial business tycoon Shauwn Mkhize having taken over a new club in Eswatini, here’s a look at how the club Mbabane Highlanders AM have rebranded to resemble Royal AM.

The story

This past weekend, Mkhize was confirmed as the new president of Mbabane Highlanders AM.

The former Royal AM owner reportedly completed a takeover of the Eswatini team, who were previously known simply as Mbabane Highlanders FC.

The takeover signals Mkhize’s relentless ambition to run a football club after her tenure with Royal AM ended miserably earlier this year following a legal battle with SARS.

During the official presentation of the new ownership, Mamkhize brought along her entire entourage, including her son Andile Mpisane and his wife Tamia.

Mkhize and company certainly wasted no time branding their new club with elements resembling Royal AM.

Before the takeover, Highlanders’ official colours were black and white. However, they have now added gold to their traditional colours.

This is also reflected in the change to their logo’s colours, with the badge now boasting a regal touch.

It remains to be seen if the club will launch new Royal AM-inspired kits, but it would not be a surprise to many, as Thwihli Thwahla had three kits in their last season in the Betway Premiership, including a black home kit, white away jersey, and a blue alternative strip.
