Kaizer Jr. reveals Chiefs master plan

Though Kaizer Chiefs are expected to strengthen their squad with new signings, Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr. has revealed why the club will not abandon their master plan which finally delivered a Nedbank Cup title.

Chiefs came across as desperate over the years in the off-season on transfer windows, as they restructured their squad heavily with new, so-called marquee signings, with the hope of competing for titles.

However, they could not get better on the field until recently, even though they are placed ninth in the Betway Premiership, with four games to go.

Surprisingly, what came to their aid this season has been youngsters carrying the team in difficult moments, with 20-year-old Wandile Duba bravely leading the attack against the likes of Mamelodi Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals and the final against Pirates.

This, ahead of experienced strikers such as Ranga Chivaviro, Ashley Du Preez, and Tashreeq Morris.

The likes of Mduduzi Shabalala, Mfundo Vilakazi, and Samkelo Zwane also carried the hopes and were the light at the end of the tunnel, before the side signed Makabi Lilepo, Thabo Cele, and Morris in January.

Motaung Jr, who was appointed in his position four seasons ago, emphasized priority on youth shortly after he assumed his role and says that shift of focus is finally bearing fruit.

"Three years (four years) back, we had a concerted plan and effort, we knew the direction we were gonna take at the time we restructured the squad. We wanted to get in the younger team and we knew with the younger team it would come with a bit of inconsistencies," Motaung Jr. said on SABC News.

"I mean, other teams can afford minutes to the younger players, our team you can't do that, but we took that step and I think if you look at our run in the Nedbank Cup with a 20-year Wandi Duba, scoring a goal that knocks out Sundowns, those are the fruits of the plan and rewards of sticking to a certain direction.

"Our youth academy is very important for us and for them to win the Diski Challenge after nine, 10 years anniversary, very special. A lot of our youngsters who stood up this season and took the baton come from that process in the academy.
"Everything is inter-linked and it's great to see youngsters from the academy coming through and shining the way they did," he continued.

Chiefs youngsters won the DStv Diski Challenge for the first time in its history just over two weeks ago with a game to spare.
