Smart Nabi approach noted after historic win

A Kaizer Chiefs legend is very impressed with how Nasreddine Nabi has turned the team's fortunes around, especially after Saturday's performance in the historic Nedbank Cup triumph.

In his first season with Chiefs, Nabi, who was absent for most of pre-season due to his contract with previous club AS FAR, has achieved what the likes of Steve Khompela, Giovanni Solinas, Molefi Ntseki, Cavin Johnson, and Arthur Zwane could not.

The side secured a 2-1 victory over rivals Orlando Pirates at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

"I'm very happy right now. This win will relieve some pressure off the coach. Even those who were calling for his dismissal will likely stop and give him more time," says a jovial Patrick Mayo.

"This historic win has bought Nabi more time. He has accomplished what most coaches have failed to do in almost 10 years.

"Resting players like Inacio Miguel during the league game against Pirates last week really worked in Nabi's favour.

"Managing player bookings also paid off. While I’m not claiming that winning the Nedbank Cup means Kaizer Chiefs have completely turned a corner, there is still a lot of work to do.

"They need to focus on improving their defence, as their biggest problem has been failing to protect leads after scoring.

"Moving forward, Nabi needs to concentrate on strengthening the backline. Like some teams, they should be capable of winning matches by a score of 1-0.

"Another factor that benefited Nabi was the change of goalkeepers," he added.

The former utility player believes giving Bruce Bvuma a rest was a smart decision as the under-fire net-minder had been suffering from fatigue after playing week in and week out.

"Nabi should remain with Kaizer Chiefs, avoid releasing any players, and aim to add depth to the squad.

"Teams that lack depth tend to struggle. Pirates are doing well because they have depth, and Mamelodi Sundowns are dominating for the same reason."
