STATS: Can Chiefs catch up with Pirates & Downs next season?

After Orlando Pirates made their own piece of history by breaching the 50-point mark with seven games left, KickOff looks at how far Kaizer Chiefs have been over the years in getting to half-a-century of points.

Ahead of the Soweto Derby Nedbank Cup final, Pirates rewrote their own history books after they reached the 50-point mark the quickest in their PSL history, going to 52 points following a narrow win over Golden Arrows on Tuesday.

This, they did after 23 matches played.

Even though Chiefs reached the Nedbank Cup final, the league statistics remain the main barometer of the quality of the team and future prospects.

The unpredictability of a cup tournament has seen the side lock horns with the defending champions in the final, despite trailing them by 22 points in the league.

There is a belief that the fortunes of Nasreddine Nabi's troops could change ahead of next season, should they win the 'Cup of Dreams'.

However, they have not been able to reach 50 points for the past five seasons, as the previous campaign they only finished on 38 points.

They were six points short of 50 in their promising season of 2022/23 under Arthur Zwane, finishing fifth, which was only a one-point improvement from the campaign prior.

Amakhosi also had a woeful season in 2020/21, ending on 36 points, which was a surprise, as they ended second with 57 points the campaign before that under Ernst Middendorp.
That was the last time they reached over half-a-century of points.

Ahead of next season though, the Naturena-based outfit could need another miracle for a turnaround, as the season before they came close to winning the league under Middendorp in 2018/19, they had actually ended on 39 points.

They finished ninth, the exact spot they occupy on the log currently.
