Tso: Nabi must go

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi faces the club's hierarchy with a bleak league record since the successful Stuart Baxter era, and now a former Orlando Pirates attacker has harsh words on the situation.

Reports of Chiefs management not convinced to take Nabi into 2025/26 emerged just after he led the club to their first trophy in a decade, the Nedbank Cup.

However, he became the first coach at the side to start and finish a season without qualifying for the Top Eight since Baxter in his first spell, between 2012 and 2015.

Even though Steve Komphela could not deliver a trophy in almost three years, Amakhosi finished fifth, fourth in the league in his two full seasons, and and then third (after resigning with one month of the campaign left).

Since then, the only coaches to start and finish a season at Naturena are Ernst Middendorp, who almost won the league, finishing second in his first full campaign, and Arthur Zwane, who ended up in fifth spot in 2022/23.

Under Nabi, the team also had the most defeats in the league (12) under the mentorship of one coach in a season.

Former Orlando Pirates star Benedict 'Tso' Vilakazi believes that's enough to relieve the ex-Young Africans coach of his duties.

"Eight wins in 28 games? Chiefs is not just a team, it has a history of conquering South African football. This is one team that can fill the stadium during the week, not only on weekends. Now you guys are okay not getting into the Top Eight?" Vilakazi asked on omniaudioafrica YouTube Channel.

"No ways! The coach failed. Let's not talk about Nedbank Cup. There were a lot of things that happened, that people were not happy with. Any team can win a trophy. Magesi have won Carling, it tells you any team can win a cup. Magesi and Chiefs are on the same level now?

"For me, Nabi took the team from better to worse. Let's go check other coaches at Chiefs before they had to leave, some coaches didn't even finish the league and had to leave. He had a pre-season. What did he do enough, really, to say he needs to stay?

"There's nothing, to be honest. He's not better than the previous coaches. Nabi must go. If you keep Nabi, it's a dream that Chiefs next season can win the league or in the next two years, not even top four!" Vilakazi fumed.

In his second spell in charge, the Soweto giants also released Baxter with one month of the 2021/22 season left, finishing fifth while Gavin Hunt was relieved with two matches left of 2020/21, as they ended up in eighth spot.
