Comitis calls for VAR in Motsepe Foundation Championship

Cape Town City chairman John Comitis' first words after the club's relegation from the Betway Premiership have centered around concerns regarding what awaits in the second tier.

City have been doomed to life in the Motsepe Foundation Championship for the 2025/26 season following a  1-0 loss to Orbit College in the ongoing PSL promotion/relegation play-offs on Wednesday.

Asked about the next step, Comitis raised serious concerns about where they are headed and believes their future may still be influenced by ongoing legal cases.

"Look, there are still some matches being addressed in court, which may give us different direction. We are waiting for that," says Comitis, speaking exclusively to KickOff.com.

"It's not an ideal situation, and it's not the right way to resolve things, but when the administration is not doing its job properly, we have to challenge them.

"The first thing our football needs to do is implement VAR because this league is heavily influenced by the refereeing association, and I can tell you that with certainty.

"What I experienced during these play-offs, the calls I received, and the attempts to pressure me were nothing short of embarrassing.

"I urge the League to start investigating and to put VAR in place as soon as possible. We were promised this in April, and I know there was resistance to it. Once it's implemented, you'll see a completely different PSL," he continues.

The veteran club boss has suggested that VAR also be introduced in the First Division, saying if not, the issues in that league, along with the court cases and associated problems, will persist.

"We need to reflect honestly on ourselves. If we don't fix these issues, the corporate world will soon take notice, and that won't bode well for us.

"If we find ourselves in the NFD, we will continue to run our club and strive for promotion. However, it's not a challenge we are looking forward to given the current conditions in the NFD.

"I will leave it at that for now, but the administration has a lot to answer for," concluded Comitis.
