INTERESTING: Officials for Downs’ final

With the tickets for the CAF Champions League final first leg sold out, Mamelodi Sundowns have the stage set in their chase for a second star following the naming of officials to run the rules.

Sundowns will host the first leg against Egyptian club Pyramids FC at Loftus Versfeld on May 24 (15:00), while the second leg is at the June 30 Stadium in Cairo on June 1.

This final will come with USD4 million (approx. R72 million) for the winners, plus a ticket to the CAF Super Cup, which offers USD500 000 (approx. R9 million).

The referee for the first leg will be Mahmood Ismail from Sudan – a country in North Africa and which shares a border with Egypt, where Pyramids come from.

Ismail was the man in the middle when Orlando Pirates won 1-0 away at MC Alger in the quarterfinals and also ran with the whistle in Bafana Bafana’s 1-1 draw away in Congo last year in the AFCON qualifiers.

His assistants will be fellow countryman Ibrahim Mohamed along with Liban Abdoulrazack from Djibouti.

The fourth official is Pacifique Ndabihawenimana from Burundi, while Daniel Laryea of Ghana will lead VAR.

Then, for the second leg, Somalian Omar Artan will have the whistle.

Artan handled Sundowns’ semifinal first against Al Ahly.

Kenyans Gilbert Cheruiyot and Stephen Yiembe will be the assistants with Louis Houngnandande of Benin as fourth official.

Bamlak Tessema from Ethiopia will lead VAR.
