Downs denied priority for Champions League final

Mamelodi Sundowns’ CAF Champions League final first leg has received no priority with the PSL going ahead to fixture six games at the same kickoff time on Saturday afternoon (15h00).

Sundowns face Pyramids for the ultimate football prize on the continent in the Champions League which comes with USD4 million (approx. R72,3 million) for the winners.

The second leg of this final will be played on June 1 in Cairo, Egypt.

Strangely, Sundowns’ match at Loftus which is sold out will get no front row seat despite the weight of its importance with the PSL playing six league games at the same time including one in the same province.

Kaizer Chiefs will close the season against Polokwane City at FNB Stadium while 70km away Sundowns will take aim at their second league title.

The expectation would have been that considering that this is a Champions League final, all other domestic games will make way like is the case across the continent.

When Pyramids host the second leg on June 1, there will be no domestic topflight games played on the same day.

On Saturday, RS Berkane won the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup final with no other games being played in Morocco.

There will no other games played in Tanzania and Zanzibar on the same day when the second leg is played on Sunday.

Sundowns played the home leg of their semi-final against Al Ahly with three other PSL games on the same day.

The Brazilians have played 51 games so far this season with 28 in the Betway Premiership, 12 in the Champions League, 4 each in the Nedbank and Carling KnockOut Cup, and three in the MTN8.

After the Champions League final, Sundowns head off to the FIFA Club World Cup in USA from June 14 to July 13.
