Ex-Fluminense star: When Sundowns signed me...

A former Fluminense star has opened up about his experience at Mamelodi Sundowns and given his verdict on who will secure victory in the upcoming clash.

In 2006, former Brazilian footballer Fabio da Costa became the first player from his country to join Sundowns.

The retired midfielder's stint with the Pretoria outfit lasted until January 2008, before he returned to his native Brazil.

Coincidentally, Da Costa also graduated from the Fluminense academy — a team set to face Sundowns later this week in a crucial clash at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

With his two former teams preparing to go head-to-head, the former playmaker has shared his memories of moving to Chloorkop almost two decades ago.

In an interview with Brazilian sports newspaper Lance!, Da Costa said: "It was a pleasant surprise. At the time, the club already had a very good structure, and the president was investing heavily.

"Today, seeing where Mamelodi have reached, it’s no surprise to me.

"I was very well received. They’re joyful people, welcoming, and on the pitch they play with ease, always with joy,” he recalled.

Speaking about Downs' current squad at the Club World Cup, Da Costa added: "They have a very good attack, with fast and skilful players.

"Lucas Ribeiro, who is Brazilian, was the top scorer in the South African Championship and is having a great season.

"They sing the whole time before entering the pitch, play with joy and without too much pressure. I think if they sort out their defence, they can go even further.

"It’s going to be a tough game, but I believe in Fluminense. Renato Gaucho has already studied the opponent thoroughly.

"Despite all my history with Mamelodi, my heart belongs to Fluminense."
