Frustrated Man City fail to close the gap on Arsenal

Manchester City dropped points in the Premier League title race after a 1-1 draw against Everton at the Etihad.

A single change by City from the win over Leeds United were presented in Bernardo Silva for Ilkay Gundogan, while the Toffees welcomed back Dominic Calvert-Lewin from injury.

It was positive opening for City midway through the first half after the red-hot Erling Braut Haaland attacked Riyad Mahrez's cross and stroked past Jordan Pickford.

Haaland looked for a quick brace and his 22nd of the season later on from a delivery in space by Silva, but the Toffees managed to court the Norwegian this time around.

The champions were very close to a second in the remaining three minutes to halftime as a diving header by John Stones from a weighted free-kick cracked the face of the post.

Following a slow opening in the second period, Everton levelled when Demarai Gray slowed one challenge in the the area and applied a delighted finish into the far corner of the net.

Pep Guardiola's men looked to restore their cushion ahead of the latter phase of the encounter with runs in and around the area by Silva, Mahrez and Kevin De Bruyne.

Everton were put to the test with eight minutes to play and needed a double stop by Pickford to keep out low attempts in the area from De Bruyne and Silva.

A trio of offensive changes five minutes later by manager Guardiola saw Phil Foden, Gundogan and the World Cup winner Julian Alvarez introduced.

The arrivals from the dugout made little impact, although they did push the Toffees to an extent but 1-1 was how the encounter at the Etihad.
