Liverpool asked the earlier questions, when a shot from Sadio Mane off a corner forced PSG goalkeeper Alphonse Areola into a save on six minutes.
PSG managed to find spaces on the breakaway, and it was Neymar’s first-time shot that plunged Alisson Becker to a save after drifting out wide to get goal-side.
The momentum continued swinging in favour of the French outfit until the half and hour mark when Daniel Sturridge, on his first start over a year headed home a cross.
PSG almost equalised straightaway from a corner, but Kylian Mbappe failed to keep his attempt on target.
It left them exposed at the back and Liverpool seized further in front from 12-yards out after Giorgi Wijnaldum’s sight on goal was impeded. James Milner made no mistake with a thumping low bottom corner finish past Areola 10 minutes to halftime.
The Ligue 1 champions pounced on poor defending as Thomas Meunier swinged home a left-footed shot in the bottom corner past Alisson to keep the contest alive.
After a tepid start to the second half, the Reds thought to have gone regained its two-goal lead with Salah’s easy tap-in but a foul on Areola in the build-up disallowed the goal.
A cross from Trent-Alexander Arnold out on the right picked out Sturridge in the centre of the box but the forward’s header went straight to Areola.
Being a doubt for the match, Jurgen Klopp brought on Robert Firmino for Sturridge 20 minutes from time.
PSG were being heavily overrun and found little way of penetrating their counterparts despite their renowned offensive quality.
Liverpool edged closer to get more goals, but misses from close-range particularly from Mane and Salah made their task heavier.
The Kop were then silenced eight minutes from time, as Mbappe levelled after combining with Neymar inside the box.
Nerves and anxiety reigned for the hosts, but Arnold’s free-kick from outside the box took a slight deflection of the wall before trickling the outside post.
On the other hand, the Blues weren’t losing any hope and nearly found the winner on the counter by Mbappe.
The best was arguably saved for last as Firmino brought the house down in added time after collecting from outside the box to finish in the bottom corner.
