Club boss furious after Man Utd star punctures player's lung in friendly

Wrexham's manager was left furious after a Manchester United star's reckless challenge resulted in one of his stars suffering a punctured lung during a pre-season friendly.

United suffered a 3-1 defeat to the English League Two club in a preseason match in the US on Wednesday morning, although the Red Devils fielded none of last season's first-team players in the game.

It is believed manager Erik ten Hag decided to preserve his core team for their friendly against Real Madrid on Thursday, and that their most recent match would be a chance for the club's youngsters to state their claim ahead of the 2023/24 campaign, with defender Johnny Evans being the only notable veteran in the side against Wrexham after he signed a short-term contract with the club last week.

It was a fiesty affair on Wednesday morning as United's young midfielder Daniel Gore, who was captain on the day, received a red card just two minutes into the second half.

However, that would not be the only major talking point of the game, with Wrexham striker Paul Mullin needing to be hospitalised due to a punctured following a "wreckless challenge" from United's goalkeeper Nathan Bishop.

The incident took place just 12 minutes into the game, when Bishop slammed into Mullin's chest after the latter attempted to head the ball goal-wards.

The shot-stopper escaped with just a yellow card, while the Wrexham star spent six agonising minutes on the ground receiving medical assistance.

As a result, the Welsh club's boss Phil Parkinson was furious with not only the referee's seemingly lenient punishment but also the United star responsible for the collision.

"I'm fuming about it, I've got to be honest with you," Parkinson said, per the Daily Mail.

"It was a clumsy, reckless challenge in a pre-season game and I'm not happy with it at all.

"We just got a call from the hospital to say there's a small puncture in his lung. It'll probably be tomorrow morning before we get the specialist to have a look at it.

"I haven't seen the goalie and he's probably best steering clear of us for the time being because we're not very happy.

"It should have been a straight red. If it's not denying a goal scoring opportunity it's still a dangerous challenge, so if you add the two scenarios together he should have been off the pitch.

"It's a dangerous challenge and obviously Paul Mullin is our talisman."

Parkinson was not in a forgiving mood as he reportedly told the 23-year-old to steer clear of his team after the United star tried to reach out to Mullin after the match, who was already in hospital in San Diego at that point.
